Summary: Learning about databases
Comment: I found this book to be useful for conceptualizing building a database. However, I found some sections about the constructing the ER diagrams and normalizing the relations to be less than clear. I would have like more examples and more diagramming of the process.

SQL for Dummies by the same author is a better tutorial for DB development.

Summary: Great book if it's what you're looking for...
Comment: This is a great book on database theory. It will give you a solid understanding that is needed to design database schema for whatever system you are designing.

If you are looking for a more specific HOWTO type book so you can jump in immediately without learning the fundamentals, this isn't the book for you.

Summary: Database Development For Dummies Review
Comment: This book has a wealth of information. The author does a great job at passing his knowledge on to the reader. You'll learn even more than you expected.

Summary: Use "Database Design for Mere Mortals" Instead
Comment: This is the first of the "dummies" books that I've used, and probably the last. The author introduces a lot of jargon and complicated models early on and then proceeds to use terms interchangably, leave models abstract that would have benefited from metaphors, and produces examples that he fails to adequately explain. When things become complicated, he demures, reminding the reader that this is, after all, only an introduction.

Perhaps I would have put my inability to use this book up to my own inadequacy when it comes to things technical, but after reading Michael Hernandez's Database Design for Mere Mortals I realized that the dummies' book was needlessly technical and theoretical.

Editorial Reviews:

Database Development For Dummies is a "prequel" to SQL for Dummies, which is used in many college database courses across the country. Database Development For Dummies tells why and how database systems came into being, then using actual examples, describes the many obstacles to success that frequently arise in database development projects, and how to handle them.

The key to successful database development is accurate and appropriate modeling of the real-world system that will be placed on the computer. Database Development For Dummies describes in detail two popular modeling methods, the entity-relationship model and the semantic object model. Once the model of a system is complete, the book describes how to convert the model into a database design, then implement the model on the target platform.

Database on intranets and the Internet is covered, as are the issues that arise when multiple users simultaneously access the same database. A chapter is devoted to the emerging enterprise database market, including data warehousing. Another chapter covers the new object-relational technology.
