Summary: Overall a great resource for exam prep but would recommend additional resources
Comment: At over 600 pages, this book is pretty daunting in size and scope. However, it is logically separated into easy-to-reference and -manage sections. If you need to brush up on your EIGRP timers, or IPv6 anycast addresses, or multicast routing, it's a breeze to just look it up in the detailed table of contents, or in the index. The "Contents at a Glance" let you find and skip to the big sections easily. Whereas the main "Contents" breaks down each of these sections into specific subsections listed topic by topic. Overall, the layout of the book makes it so easy to pick up where you last left off, or to just look up topics as a reference guide.

Once you actually start digging into the text of the book, you will find that it is clearly written, keeping the reader interested in all technical matters without getting too dry or mundane.

Another feature of the book are the "Do I know this already?" quizzes and "Foudation Summaries" that start off each chapter. These allow the reader to assess what they already know about an upcoming section and what they need to focus on. The end-of-chapter "Q&A" will solidify any knowledge you have gained or need to review. I never found myself relying on these portions of the book too much, but they could prove useful for others depending on their study habits.

There are many ways to study for a CCNP exam such as the BSCI exam. At first I wanted a quicker and easier way than to go through a 600-page book. However, the layout of the book allows readers to skim or skip through sections that are already familiar from CCNA or alternative studies. The book provides such solid fundamental understanding of concepts and having a strong grasp on these concepts far outweighs simply memorizing specific details relevant to exams.

That being said, I did also have access to in-class instruction and a lab manual for practice as well as a bit of on-the-job experience. However, the bulk of my knowledge definitely came from the pages within this book. If you have the patience and drive to dive deep into this book and ensure total understanding of all topics (which may mean re-reading a few sections or using alternate sources), this book should be tops on your list as a foundation for your studies. I passed my BCSI exam on first attempt (although not by much) after a total of about 4 months of prep.

Summary: Bad quality printing press?
Comment: Maybe I just got a fluke book, but the one I received was very hard to read. The pages are a rough low contrast white paper, but some pages have a stained look to them. It is like reading black text on a smeared newspaper. As for the content I bought the color page PDF for the BSCI exam by Cisco press used it and some video learning modules and passed the exam. Again I am not complaining about the content of the book, if it is similar to the PDF then it is good. However, the book looks like an illegal copy you would buy out of the back of a van. Very poor quality press work!

Summary: Mistakes & Inconsistencies Throughout
Comment: I have the 3rd printing from July 2008. Make sure you download the latest errata from the Cisco website to catch some of the errors in the product, especially for earlier printings of the work.

This product has Ciscopress on the cover. I would expect it to be the best material for preparing to pass Cisco's official exam. I have made to chapter 5 and my frustration grows with each chapter.

The book is shoddy. The examples and questions related to route summarization are confusing and incomplete. (Fortunately, I still have my McGraw Hill/Osborne CCNA book to clarify these issues).

There are errors on figures and tables (Figure 5-1 refers to a DDP?)

The "Do I Already Know" quizzes in the book and on the CD do not have matching answers! For example, Chapter 3, quiz question 1: The answer in the book is "A reliable unicast" and on the cd the answer is "Best effort unicast" (in this case the book is correct, see page 71). I have tried updating the test engine, no update exists.

I have never experienced these types of errors with Sybex products or McGraw Hill. I won't experience them again with Ciscopress books because I doubt I would purchase another book from them.

Summary: just a supplement
Comment: A good supplement but not a sole resource for the exam. IGP's are covered in depth but topics like BGP, redistribution and multicast are vaguely explained without much examples. frequent errors in the answers to the quizes that are in the begining of each chapter.
