Customer Rating: Summary: Admitted buyers remorse Comment: There is nothing fundamentally wrong with this book. As a few of the other commenters have already pointed out, it's a window focused book. Had I actually done my research more thoroughly on my ubuntu box, I would have seen that and gone for Game Programming All in One, Third Edition instead which is by the same author and uses the platform independent Allegro library. Again, nothing implicitly wrong with this book, just not necessarily for me.
Customer Rating: Summary: Windows-centric Comment: I would not recommend this book for anyone except Windows developers. One of the attractions of OpenGL is that it is cross platform. While not a bad book, as early as the second chapter it immediately focuses on WGL, which is a Win32 API that presents an interface to OpenGL itself -- if you're not a Windows programmer you'll get lost quickly as there is nothing for you here that you can actually type in and experiment with. I don't understand why they chose that path instead of simply presenting pure OpenGL, but being Windows-centric will make this book frustrating for anyone trying to learn OpenGL on a non-Windows platform.
Customer Rating: Summary: Great starting point for openGL Comment: The book is well organized and follows a logical order, I originally ran examples from chapters 1-3 in VC++ 6, now I'm using VC++ 9 Express Edition without any problems. The authors explain their topics in a concise method, allowing for a solid expansion of basic ideas into the more complex concepts. It would have been nice to have a copy of the book in electronic form, with more meat in the "On Your Own" sections at the end of the chapters. By no means does this wish detract from the fact the book presents a solid starting point for openGL.
Customer Rating: Summary: Very helpful.. Comment: Very very helpful..
You end up familiar with every basic aspect of OpenGL.
I totally recommend it..
Customer Rating: Summary: Good Introduction to OpenGL - but what about Games? Comment: This book is a good introductory book, but it should have probably been called "Beginning OpenGL". The Gaming part is mentioned only briefly, and for any detail you'll have to go to what's on the CD. The CD literally makes this a decent book to buy; without the CD the OpenGL Red Book is probably money better spent. The other fault of this book is that the images are sub-par; it looks like the authors themselves did the images instead of a professional graphics house.
