Customer Rating: Summary: Too thin, wrong angle on important topic Comment: I was aware that this book was outdated by the time I ordered it, but I was curious to see what exactly it had to offer. Ironically, it's best use (IMHO) is NOT how to use ColdFusion to build an intranet - the code exampled used are too simple and rudimentary to do much good without major tweaking - but, rather, as an introduction to the intranet concept. And as such, it actually does a decent job. Now, if only Mr. Desborough had stuck with elaborating in depth on the structural setup of an intranet and mentioned ColdFusion only in passing, then it would have been a really good read. As it is, the book can no longer be recommended. CF3.0 is too outdated, and the code examples are downright lame - more space is wasted on gratuitous hype for the consultants and companies who have written the code than on actual code. And a large part of the code consists of commented-out copyright notices from those same consultants. Waste of paper.
Customer Rating: Summary: Must have book! Comment: If you are looking for an authorative source on Cold Fusion and for getting ideas for your database driven Web site, this is a must have book. All the applications contained are very professional and require little work getting them up and running on your Internet or Intranet site. Also excellent for learning how Cold Fusion works.
Customer Rating: Summary: Answered: What are others doing and how? Comment: I purchased this book and have been pretty pleased with it. The code examples are straightforward and obviously laid-out for combination programmers and IT people asking "Can CF do what I need -- and how?"I read some other reviewer's comments and came to a couple of conclusions: First: The "readers" from Minn./St. Paul MO must have little time on their hands (same person?), because several CF book titles inlcude their reviews, all of which are miserable attitudes dressed up as book reviews. Get a life! Second: No book is going to answer all your questions unless you just stop asking questions. This book is aimed at enhancing your understanding of what is possible and pointing out some simple ways to achieve those ends -- it is not a programmer's reference manual nor a 'bible'.
Customer Rating: Summary: All code, No explanation or index Comment: I wanted to learn CF and have a reference. I got neither. I will be returning this to the bookstore from whence it came. Yeah, it has a lot of sample code. I can find sample code all over the net for free.
Customer Rating: Summary: Not for the beginner - but good examples Comment: If (as I was), you want a book which has lots of sample code that you can tear to pieces and transplant into your own systems, then this book is for you. However, if you want to find a book which teaches you Cold Fusion, look at Ben Forta's book instead.
