Making a neat looking interface

by Alien Pump

We made this image last time:

now we continue with step number:

1. Open the file with the image over or remake it following the Lighting Effects tutorial.

2.Ctrl select the layer with the form on it. Go to Select-> Modify-> Contract and use
50 pixels. Now go to the alpha palette and make a new layer. Fill the contracted selection
with white and apply the action we made in the Lighting Effects tutorial. You should get
something like this:

Now you can make a new action, which is very useful for making round cornered forms:
First step is: Image-> Adjust-> Levels with Input levels: 122; 1.00; 136
and for the second step these levels: 55; 1.00; 200.

3.Ctrl select the alpha channel you got after applying the actions and return to the Layer
palette. Create a new layer and fill it with the Dark Blue you used in the Lighting Effects tutorial.
Set the Layer Mode to Overlay and double click the layer. Apply the standard Drop Shadow style
and Stroke with black color and 1 pixel border. Click OK. Right click on the layer and choose Copy
Layer Style.

4.Experiment by adding several forms on separate layers made with the Polygonal Lasso Tool.
Right click to every layer and choose Paste Layer Effect. Add some warped text using the
Arc Style. Add also menu text on the contracted image we made. In the end you must get
something like this:

I may write a Flash tutorial about making this interface interactive in the future. But for now
you got enough!
--------
This tutorial only handles the basics, in the future I am planning one very big tutorial about
making this kind of interfaces. This tutorial was made only to show you the basic techniques
I use on my interfaces. Keep in mind that Lighting Effects, Blur, layer modes and Alpha channels
management are the key to the good interface in Photoshop. I use all the other filters just for
touching pictures or other gallery stuff and very rare for interface. So expect a huge tutorial
in the future showing my way of making the things.
C ya!
