Customer Rating: Summary: A collection of very good ideas Comment: I found the book very intresting and informative. Modules on web TV, guidelines on web content and thought leadership were very intresting. The book does not reveal a plan or too many details but serves as a very good introduction to the new age of marketing and PR.
Customer Rating: Summary: Marketing in an online world Comment: David Scott has hit the nail on the head with "New Rules of Marketing & PR." Today, we operate in a world where people of all ages spend a majority of their day either directly online or connected to the Internet via email, IM, RSS and other means. New Rules shows the way to being heard by your customers in that ever growing world using news releases, blogs, social media and more. I definitely recommend New Rules to everyone looking to learn how to begin an online marketing effort in this new age.
Customer Rating: Summary: Real life application, no fluff Comment: I bought this book after participating in a webinar where David was a presenter. I was not disappointed. If you are looking to move beyond the traditional 4 P marketing and PR strategies and tactics, David's book is the one for you.
Clear, concise, and well writen, The New Rules will give you specific tactics to implement that WORK.
I've been using his methods and now am in the top 6 in natural Google search.
Customer Rating: Summary: A good basic primer Comment: This is not a technical manual that goes into detail about the ins and outs of marketing and PR. It's really geared toward the novice or intermediate without much of a general background in the above mentioned categories. Scott's reputation precedes him; however, I don't know much about him beyond what I've read in this book and snippets elsewhere such as on the internet. Nevertheless, if you're a novice in the field of online marketing and need some good general insight into what's out there on the World Wide Web and how to use those tools, this is a good place to start. I've found that shopping online for additional detailed information on the material covered here in a general manor is the next step beyond Scott's book.
Customer Rating: Summary: Just Read It. Comment: While most of us don't have the resources to build a globally recognizable tag line, David Meerman Scott's book shows anyone with an Internet connection how to build, keep and retain customers and fans worldwide. It is written in an informal but professional way that gives "how to" instructions as well as his own and other people's experiences. The book provides an excellent overview of the online world and all the new and emerging marketing tools.
The only downside is as David notes, things change so fast these days that having the information in book form may result in it outdating itself by the time of publishing. As such, the only thing I found the book already short on information was about videos and the explosive growth in public servers and channels. As vlogs and vodcasts are noted, I would expect a lot more in this area that marketers must keep pace with. Because people do watch and share videos, they are a critical marketing tool. But how do you get through all the video noise already out there? One way I've been trying is to use a blog to index videos that are posted on other servers so you can use the power of the video servers, blog registration sites, and other related blog sites to increase SEO and audience segmentation to reach target markets in an over-blogged, over-videoed world (check out http://mom-matters.blogspot.com as my experimental example!). A technology mashup of sorts, I believe the future of online marketing will require such understanding and creative application. This book provides a great foundation and I am sure David's own blog will keep us in the know as it and other things progress.
The book is an engaging and easy read. I think it is career limiting for any marketer who doesn't read it.
