Customer Rating: Summary: Good for Perl Beginners Comment: This easy to read book filled with excellent examples gives beginners a good understanding of the workings of perl. After your done with this, move on with "Programming Perl" and "Perl Cookbook" both also from OReilly.
Customer Rating: Summary: Excellent starting point Comment: I had to learn Perl in 2 weeks for a new job, and this book allowed it to happen. I only gave it four stars because the author could have explained objects, packages, references, and nested data structures but did not because why sell one book when you can sell two. Which brings me to: if you need to become an advanced perl programmer it is best that you continue your education with purchasing both "Perl Programming", "and the "Perl Cookbook".Good Luck
Customer Rating: Summary: Great for unix and c types Comment: I purchased Learning Perl as a unix user and novice C progammer. As a webmaster, I needed to learn more about Perl so I could write and debug cgi scripts in the language. Coming from my unix/c background, the text was very clear and easy to understand. Schwartz does a great job of using code snippets to explain what he says.
Customer Rating: Summary: A great book for beginners..... Comment: I was scared to death of this language, but after reading the first six chapters, I am actually enjoying the learning process associated with Perl. This book builds on examples, and gives you helpful quizzes at the chapter ends. This book was recommended to me by a friend in programming, and anyone interested in learning Perl, should start with this book....Excellent Book!
Customer Rating: Summary: First chapter is worth the price of the book Comment: I have read a lot of programming books. This one is an excellent combination of a textbook, tutorial and reference book. The first chapter ("A walk through Perl") will give you enough of an understanding to start tackling problems with this useful language.
