If you want a one stop reference, this is the book.
This spans from beginer to expert. I've been programming now for six years and this has replaced a stack of other books.

Summary: Excellent book
Comment: Eventhough I just bought the book and I'm read first few chapters this book is very well structured, a good companion, definitely a book that one must have if you're planning to work on client side.

It is divided clearly into chapters (so you know exactly what is going) easy to follow and as well easy to jump whenever you feel that you need something in particular at later stage.

Concise writing (I don't like some authors that spend more time on writing about what they do on the weekends rather that on topic), it is 5th edition this clearly shows how long this book has lasted a clear evidence of quality.

I like in general books from O'Rielly.

Summary: Always Within Reach
Comment: This is THE reference book for JavaScript. I go to it when I have a question about how something works or how to do something. It has a detailed index, which is always important to me because I rarely want to read a chapter when I'm looking for something specific.

I've owned two previous editions, and when I replaced them, they were each well-worn and dog-eared.

I recommend this to anyone who finds themselves in the world of JavaScript.

Summary: lousy examples
Comment: I hated the book. I purchased the book because I wanted information on how to use Javascript to implement GET or POST transactions for a website I am working on. None of the examples are complete or clear enough to be of any use whatsoever. Its a lot of verbage with partial code snippets much like microsoft's (terrible) documentation. Don't waste your money.

Summary: Invaluable Resource
Comment: The author's approach to explaining the JavaScript technology is so versatile that both experienced and novice programmers alike will almost certainly appreciate this definitive guide.
