Customer Rating: Summary: The only book need to pass the SCWCD Exam Comment: I know some may find the style of this book annoying but I loved it. There is lots of repetition to drive points home and the mock exams are well written. There is humor so you don't wake up with drool marks obscuring the most important/boring topic in the book. And finally, just by reading this book and reviewing the DTDs for tomcat's web.xml I was able to pass the SCWCD with flying colors.
Customer Rating: Summary: Outstanding way to learn Servlets and JSP Comment: If you have been a Java Programmer, but never had the chance to spend much time building dynamic Java web applications...then this is the book for you.
Some Head First books are high-in-chatter, but low-in-content. However, Head First Servlets & JSP somehow manages to cover more material than the classic "Core Servlets & javaServerPages" book from Sun Microsystems; And make the learning fun. (ex: Core Servlets doesn't cover JSTL or web security, but Head First Servlets does).
The only downside -- Head First books are great learning books, but not good reference books. So plan to supplement your learning with another Servlet/JSP book, or downloaded materials from the Internet (starting with the Servlet/JSP specifications).
Customer Rating: Summary: If I coul give it 6 stars I would give it 7! Comment: Not only the content is way to complete for the exam and the real life, the learning metodology is a work of art, it is very light to read (unlike other technical books that dry your brain in one hour).
It has enough information, If you look at the specifications of the topics on the exam, theres no way anyone can memorise the whole thing, but this book tels you whats really important for your every day development and hence the exam.
Customer Rating: Summary: Authors have clarity Comment: Authors know the stuff. They didn't just reformat the contents from other places to make this book
Bought it with lots of suspicion. It exceded my expectations.
Customer Rating: Summary: Not Enough End-to-End Examples Comment: This book has its strong points and weakness. It explains certain concepts really well. However it did not have much end-to-end exercise for people to practice. Only 1 end-to-end example in the entire book as I recall. Therefore, it is hard to sink in what you have read. Especially, jsp and servlets need to have multiple pieces put together in order to make the application run. The example does not need to be complehansive, but will help the readers to put all the pieces together. If you are looking for examples to guide you through, then this book is not for you.
