Customer Rating: Summary: The basics of Java web development Comment: Apart from reviewing the servlet/JSP standard APIs, this book teaches how to build web applications using the Model-View-Controller design pattern in Java. In MVC, a servlet (controller) receives user requests, calls the application logic (model) and dispatches the result to the proper JSP (view). It also addresses common issues in web application development, from deployment to security.
Before being able to develop professional web applications, which typically involve the use of frameworks such as Struts or Tapestry, you must get acquainted with their foundations: servlets and Java Server Pages (JSP). That's what you can learn from "Head First Servlets & JSP".
Despite its relatively low signal-to-noise ratio (a typical feature of the "Head First" series) and its lack of more advanced design considerations, this engaging book might still be a good starting point for those interested in Java web development.
Customer Rating: Summary: Missing some thing Comment: The learn process is very easy with this book, it's a very good book if you want to learn, but not very good as reference book.
Customer Rating: Summary: Perfect good .. for the exam and maybe Web apps. Comment: I am studying for the SCWCD exam and this is a very important book for this exam. It really cleared a lot of doubts.
As a beginner in J2EE I can say that this books is very helpful for new Java programmers wanting to enter J2EE world.
I know there are a million more books on J2EE web but very few are as fun as this one.
This book is really a pleasure to use (I can tell because I have read a lot of J2EE books that are boring as smart as they look/say they are).
After passing the exam I will still use the book before learning frameworks for the web layer... because it's a great book for web foundations although it has over 800 pages.
If you are into SCWCD exam visit saloon.javaranch.com and it may help you meet a study group for SCWCD.

For that purpose, I recommend it as readable and even enjoyable. It also makes a great beginner to intermediate level resource. Plus the girl on the cover is really cute. What's not to like?
