Customer Rating: Summary: Great book for a narrow audience Comment: I found this book to have way too much fluff. Certain concepts that are easily understood were given too many pages, which made the reading a chore. I felt like I was forced to read all of the zany sidebars on each page in order to get the information I needed. This book is massive, and serves better as exercise equipment given that the mass is entirely the result of large fonts and graphics. Experienced developers should stay clear of this title.
Customer Rating: Summary: Continuing the series of the best Java books to learn Comment: I purchased several copies of this book for my team. They are experienced front end developers, but wanted to learn more about the Java back end that we use with our clients. This book continues with the same format of the excellent Head First Java. It makes the content simple to understand and learn. Highly recommended if you are trying to learn server side Java.
Customer Rating: Summary: Good & easy! Comment: It's a very good book that has a different way to put the message into your brain! Great job from the autors!
Customer Rating: Summary: If you buy only one book for SCWCD it should be this book Comment: I purchased this book for my wife's SCWCD exam; her Java experience was almost that of a beginner. While browsing through this book in a book store, we found that the concepts were explained in a logical and very clear fashion. We were both attracted to the presentation style, diagrams and the way it made the subject seem accessible and interesting. We decided to purchase it and I ordered it later in the day on Amazon. On exam day, I was very happy to note that she passed with 89% on the first try. Total time she spent in studying the book was 2-3 weeks I estimate. Return on investment I would estimate as 100%. In short, if you buy only one book for SCWCD it should be this book.
Customer Rating: Summary: Excellent book to learn JSP/Servlets and its workings Comment: Like others have noted, great book to learn and probably write the exam. Just by reading it alone, and not doing or rather writing most of the code, I managed to usually answer 70-80% of the questions at the end of the chapters, which I assume, might mean, if I do write the exam, I have a good chance of passing it.
They take a great approach to teaching the concepts and how they do it, as others have mentioned. I loved this book so much, that I bought the EJB and Sun Java certification books, with the intention of passing the Java Programming certification exam first. I am experienced .Net/ASP etc guy, who has for past two years gotten into heavy Java coding, and I have to say, I am realizing why JSP is superior to ASP.Net in quite a few features, although it involves probably more coding or setup than normal ASP.Net guy whould do.
