Customer Rating: Summary: Almost like a 'for dummies' book... know your stuff first Comment: This book reads too much like a "For Dummies" book, like the author wants to assume you don't have a lot of technical background but at the same time knows you need it to understand what he's talking about. It's an irritating read in that respect, but at least it has some new stuff in it I didn't know.
This book I find works only because I have a lot of technical knowledge. The book doesn't pose any difficulty in understanding; it's just so damn much is inaccurate here and there, minor stuff like port 21 being ssh (21 is FTP, 22 is SSH) or John the Ripper returning the "right" password but without proper case (it would take actual WORK to make something like John return incorrect case; and I've used John a lot, it's case-correct). It's a shock because I'm almost strictly an O'Reilly Books guy, so I'm not used to needing to double-check the author's facts so badly.
Overall what this book does is expand your knowledge. If you have some background in Windows, Linux, and network administration, you'll easily shrug off and correct the factual inaccuracies sprinkled here and there. At the same time, you'll find new tools, techniques, and considerations you probably never thought about before.
What this book does not do is make you a hacker. Hacking is an engineering art; you don't just regurgitate facts like "a^2 + b^2 = c^2" when you encounter something like "triangle has a=3 b=5 what is the hypotenuse" here. You're going to encounter things like "tetrahedron has equilateral base 4 across, height is 5, find volume" and have to work out how to get this information from just what you know. Every day the playing field changes, new products come out, old products get holes fixed, new exploits come out for new holes discovered in everything, new techniques and new tools are developed; and you have to not only identify all of them, but also develop your own plan for applying the new knowledge to your job. Remember the people that hire you are paying you to protect them from today's threats, not handwave because you threw Nessus at it with just the GPL plug-in list and it came back okay.
Customer Rating: Summary: Fantastic Book....Great Job Michael Gregg Comment: I bought this book, about 3 weeks ago.
I am a John Grisham fan, and seems like the author is too.
Very interesting reading and lots and lots of labs, and it provides info
on where to get the tools for free. The labs are very detailed and guides you step by step.
If you are serious about learning this trade, this book is a good start.
It's worth its weight in gold!! Oh.. it comes with a CD with practice exams and a ISO version of Bootable Linux CD. Wonderful.
Apdf version of the book is included also.
Customer Rating: Summary: Great Ethical Hacking and Study Resource Comment: I think Michael Gregg did a fantastic job at taking everything that is in the CEH exam and presenting it in a logical and easy to read format. I personally enjoyed reading the book and recommend reading this book not only for the exam but also to learn more about ethical hacking and the tools used in our profession. I owe a big portion of my CEH certification to Michael Gregg and this book. Regardless if you have no experience or years of experience this book will provide you the knowledge to pass the CEH and further your knowledge or help you start a new career. Job well done!

Customer Rating: Summary: Better than Offical Material Comment: If your studying for the CEH exam or just want to learn more about ethical hacking and security this book is a must have.
I wish they would have included this with the course material as it's a better prep for the test. It also comes with a Linux ISO that has many of the tools used by ethical hackers and discussed in the book.
